A waterscape is a natural, nature-inspired water feature that brings water, movement and life into your outdoor space.

A waterscape may be a pond, stream, waterfall, pondless waterfall, fountainscape, natural pool, aquatic habitat or a combination of these elements.

At SA Waterscapes, we use the word waterscape because we are not just adding water to your garden. We are creating a natural-feeling part of your landscape that is designed to suit your space, your lifestyle and the way you want to enjoy your outdoors.

All of these waterscapes are chemical free, living ecosystems that recirculate water to help with natural filtration.

A pond is a larger body of water where you can keep fish or other aquatic life. It can also be teamed with waterfalls, streams and planting to create a thriving garden ecosystem.

A pondless system allows you to enjoy the movement and sound of running water without an open pond. The water disappears into an underground reservoir and recirculates back to the top of the waterfall, making it a great option if you would like flowing water in your space without a visible body of water.

A natural pool or swim pond is designed for swimming and works with nature. Instead of relying on chemical treatment, it uses biological filtration, circulation, aquatic planting zones, rock, gravel and balanced water movement to help keep your water healthy and inviting.

An aquatic habitat is a large body of water, much like a natural swim pond, but instead of being used for swimming it is created as a home for fish, frogs, turtles and other aquatic life. It will often include a large wetland area to help naturally filter the water.

A fountainscape is a decorative water feature designed to bring the sound, movement and beauty of flowing water into your space. It may include sculptural pieces such as urns, spheres or spillway bowls. They can be a standalone feature or as part of a larger pond, stream or garden design.

Depending on your design, the water may flow into a hidden reservoir, a small pond or a contained water area. A fountainscape can be simple and understated, or it can become a layered showpiece with multiple features working together.

A small pondless waterfall, decorative urn, sphere, spillway bowl, container water feature or small pond can completely change the feel of your space without needing a large footprint.

Yes. Small spaces can be perfect for waterscapes.

Yes. Most waterscapes are designed to blend into an existing garden, outdoor entertaining area or landscape design. We can also create a waterscape as part of a new build or new landscaping project.

Where practical, we can work with your existing plants, pathways, retaining walls, lawn areas, outdoor rooms and garden beds.

Our goal is to create a feature that feels settled into your space, not like it has just been placed on top of it.

Yes. We can help assess existing ponds, waterfalls and water features that need repair, improvement or a fresh new look. Depending on the condition of your feature, it may need a simple repair, a refresh or a complete rebuild. We will assess this during the quoting process.

Common issues include leaks, poor water clarity, failing pumps, tired rockwork, overgrown plants or features that no longer suit your garden. Sometimes a simple repair or clean-up is enough. Other times, a renovation can completely transform your space into something healthier, easier to manage and more beautiful.

We are also able to re-waterproof existing features where suitable.

Yes. We can assess leaking ponds and water features to find the likely cause and recommend the best repair.

Not every drop in water level means there is a hole in your pond. Water loss can sometimes come from evaporation, low edges, splash from waterfalls, stream movement or displaced rock. In other cases, your feature may need patching, re-waterproofing or rebuilding.

We believe everyone is an individual, and every waterscape should be too. Your garden, access, style, budget, existing landscaping and long-term goals all play a part in your final design.

Maintenance depends on the type of waterscape, its size, surrounding trees, filtration and aquatic life in the pond.

Just like a garden landscape, your waterscape will require some care. This may include removing excess leaves, trimming aquatic plants and keeping an eye on water clarity.

We recommend yearly maintenance for your waterscape. This may include a pump service, full clean and water testing.

Yes. SA Waterscapes can help with maintenance, servicing, repairs and seasonal care.

Whether you need occasional help, a clean-up, troubleshooting or regular maintenance, we can discuss what is suitable for your waterscape and how much support you would like.

We recommend yearly maintenance for your waterscape. This may include a pump service, full clean and water testing.

Yes, you can turn your pump off at night in some cases. Depending on your waterscape size and whether you have fish, we may recommend keeping your pump running.

Constant circulation helps oxygenate the water, supports filtration and keeps beneficial bacteria working properly.

For pondless waterfalls and some decorative features without fish, the pump may not need to run all the time.

We can advise what is best for your specific feature.

A few leaves are normal, but too many can affect your water quality as they break down.

Regularly remove excess leaves with a pond net or by hand, especially during autumn, after windy weather or if your pond sits under trees.

Algae is common in ponds and water features, especially when there are excess nutrients or an imbalance in the ecosystem.

The best long-term approach is to work with the cause, not just the symptom. This may include improving filtration, increasing circulation, adding aquatic plants, reducing excess nutrients, removing organic debris, managing the number of fish and making sure your pond has the right balance of shade and oxygen.

A little algae is natural. The goal is to create a thriving ecosystem where algae does not take over.

Yes, you may be able to have fish in your pond or natural pool. Our aquatic habitats are created specifically to house fish and other aquatic animals.

The number and type of fish will depend on the size, depth, filtration, oxygen levels and overall design of your waterscape. Too many fish can create excess nutrients and affect your water quality, so balance is important.

All of our waterscapes can attract birds, dragonflies, bees, frogs and other native visitors. Moving water, plants, shallow edges and safe landing areas can all help create a more inviting habitat.

Yes. We use pond and waterscape materials that are chosen with aquatic life and outdoor environments in mind.

This may include rubber liner, protective geofabric, rock, gravel, aquatic plants, pumps and filtration components suited to water garden environments. The aim is to create a feature that is safe, stable and healthy for fish, plants, pets and wildlife.

Waterscapes vary because every project is completely unique to you, your space and your design.

Size, site access, excavation, rock selection, filtration, pumps, lighting, planting and design detail are some of the factors that influence the final cost.

Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all price, we look at what is involved in creating the right feature for your space.

Every waterscape is fully customisable to you, your space and your budget.

When you send through your information via our contact form, we do ask for photos of your space. These are very helpful, but they are not enough for us to accurately quote your waterscape.

Your project begins with an on-site consultation with Corrie, where we explore your ideas, goals and the possibilities for your space. This is where we get to understand what you love and how you envision your outdoor environment.

We can design your waterscape on its own, or include landscaping of the surrounding area to create a fully integrated and cohesive garden space. This is entirely based on what you would like.

Yes. Lighting can completely transform your waterscape at night.

It can highlight waterfalls, rocks, plants, pathways, steps, seating areas and the movement of water. Subtle lighting can make your space safer, more usable and more beautiful after dark.

Lighting can be included in your original design or added later to many existing features.
